After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Johannesburg, South Africa, Barry spent a year in the army as a military policeman. After the army, Barry has worked at Thomson’s Publications, Turret Press, Pulse Publications', BIKE magazine, S.A. Auto, and Scope. Thereafter, he helped found Drive, a twice-monthly tabloid-sized automotive newspaper. After emigrating to the U.S., Barry freelanced in Florida for the Rob St. Francis automotive newspaper syndicate and for Florida Motorsport magazine before moving to Michigan to join Automobile magazine in 1987. He stayed aboard the fledgling publication for five years before being persuaded to join CAR and DRIVER as Technical Director in 1992.
