Mark Gillies

Executive Editor

Mark was born in the United Kingdom and educated at Reading School and St. Catharine’s College in Cambridge. He started out working for Classic and Sportscar magazine in England in 1983 before moving to Autocar as a features editor in 1985. In 1987, he left to become a staff writer at CAR and Supercar Classics, and was almost immediately promoted to be editor of Supercar, a post he retained until 1991. He then spent three years freelancing before editing CAR for a year from early 1993 to 1994. After that, he went back to the freelance world and came to the United States in 1996 as executive editor for Automobile magazine. He left Automobile to become executive editor of CAR and DRIVER in February 2006. Mark is a lifelong car enthusiast who currently owns and races a 1931 Austin Seven, 1961 Lotus 20, and 1966 Brabham BT18. Other hobbies include skiing, cooking, coaching soccer, keeping fit, antiques, and reading—especially magazines.
