Patrick Bedard

Editor-at-Large

Patrick Bedard received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University and a Master of Automotive Engineering from the Chrysler Institute of Engineering. He worked as a Development Engineer at Chrysler Corporation for five years before joining CAR and DRIVER as Technical Editor in 1967. In addition to a monthly column, new-car road tests, and feature stories in the magazine, Bedard writes occasionally for other publications and for TV films. His book, Expert Driving, was published in 1987. Before retiring from auto racing in 1984, after 12 years as a driver, he raced in a wide variety of events including Le Mans, two times in the Indianapolis 500, and a stint on the Jaguar factory team. Two racing distinctions are particularly satisfying to his engineering interest: first driver to win a professional race in North America in a car powered by a Wankel engine; and first driver to top 200 mph at Indy in a car powered by a passenger-car (stockblock) engine.
