David Schonauer
Vice President/Editor-in-Chief
David Schonauer has been the Editor-in-chief of American Photo since its launch in 1990. During the subsequent years he has worked with every major photographer in the world, including Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Annie Leibovitz, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. In 1993 American Photo received the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. It has also received numerous design and photography awards.
Prior to coming to American Photo, Schonauer was Senior Editor and Managing Editor of Outside magazine and Articles Editor of Chicago magazine. He has written for a number of publications, including the New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Stern, and American Heritage. Schonauer lives in Larchmont, New York with his wife, the author Michelle Stacey, and their two children, Anna and Henry.
