Mike Mettler
VICE PRESIDENT/EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Mike Mettler began his career in journalism as an intern at High Fidelity, subsequently joining its staff fulltime while still in college. He joined Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. in 1989 as managing editor of Car Stereo Review, was appointed executive editor in early 1996, and, before turning 30, was named editor-in-chief that October. He also concurrently served as managing editor of both Sound & Image and Video. In 2000, Mettler proposed that Car Stereo Review be revamped as Mobile Entertainment, coming up with the title of the magazine, its new focus, and its tagline, “Technology in Motion.” With the February/March 2004 issue, the magazine’s title was modified to ME — Mobile Entertainment. He later adapted it to Road & Track’s Road Gear before the property shut down at the end of 2005.
Mettler became editor-in-chief of Sound & Vision in January 2006. He’s been contributing to S&V since its inception in February/March 1999, having penned its monthly “Road Gear” column for 5 years; interviewed scores of musicians, actors, and directors about technology for the “15 Minutes With” column; and written numerous features and CD and DVD reviews. In anticipation of the magazine’s 50th anniversary in 2008, Mettler has been immersing himself in re-reading every single issue of S&V’s predecessor, Stereo Review, starting with the February 1958 issue of SR’s own original incarnation, HiFi & Music Review.
Mettler graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Magazine Journalism from Drake University. He and his wife Krista, an independent music publicist, have been married for 15 years and live in Fanwood, New Jersey. In his “spare” time, Mettler is working on a book about 100 great recordings of the rock era and serves as the “biographer/cartographer” for the Canadian rock band, The Tragically Hip. An inveterate audiophile, Mettler spends many a sleepless night trying to reconcile his undying love of vinyl with his iPod obsession. And someday, he hopes to own a turquoise 1967 Mustang fastback.
